Mini Grants Awards–DEADLINE NEXT WEEK

Thank you to all those that applied for the 2017 FRLAEF Mini Grant. Laura Rumer sent you an award email on October 12. If you completed an application but did not receive an award email, please CONTACT US.

Most HTMP schools requested shirts/polos for their mini grant awards.  When designing your shirt/polo, please keep in mind the FRLAEF will not pay for shirts/polos with AOHT or DECA logos on them.  All Mini Grant invoices, orders and receipts are due to the FRLAEF no later than December 8, 2017.


South Broward High School Mini Grant

Vicky Edgcomb, HTMP teacher at South Broward High School sent us this photo. It shows one of her classes wearing the shirts their received with their Mini Grant this year. Behind them is the bulletin board they purchased using last year’s Mini Grant.


Pineapple Awards

The Pineapple Award recognizes one HTMP teacher as having demonstrated a commitment to the HTMP program through dedication to HTMP students.

Anyone may nominate an HTMP teacher they feel deserves this recognition using the following criteria:

  • HTMP Teacher must have taught the HTMP curriculum at least one year

Forward the nomination link to your principal, your fellow teachers or your business partners so they can nominate YOU!

The nomination link will be available in January.


FRLAEF Scholarships

The FRLAEF is awarding at least $44,000 in scholarships to Florida HTMP and ProStart students this school year. Scholarships will be presented during the Salute to Excellence Awards dinner on Sunday, March 4, 2018 in Orlando.

The minimum scholarship amount awarded is $2,000.

In order to be eligible for this scholarship the applicant must:

• Be a graduating senior who will begin post-secondary education during the 2018-2019 school year
• Be entering a culinary or hospitality post-secondary program
• Return a copy of their OFFICIAL high school transcript to FRLAEF by application deadline

The application will be available in January.


15th Annual Florida HTMP Competition

The 15th Annual HTMP Competition will take place Monday, March 5, and Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at the Rosen Plaza Hotel in Orlando.

HTMP Competition paperwork is due by January 26, 2018.

The paperwork was emailed to each participating teacher in October. If you did not receive it, please contact Amy Parker at [email protected].


Salute to Excellence Awards Dinner

The Salute to Excellence Awards will take place on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at the Rosen Plaza Hotel in Orlando. The awards dinner will recognize all ProStart Competition, Pineapple Award, Scholarship recipients and Hospitality Excellence Awardees. Registration will begin in January 2018.


Virtual Business–Hotel

The American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute teamed up with Knowledge Matters to offer a virtual hotel you can use in your classroom.

Students who complete the Hotel Online simulator receive an exemption from the 100-hour internship component of the industry-recognized Certification in Hospitality Tourism and Management.  Students must still pass both the HTMP Year 1 and Year 2 exams in order to earn the certification.

Hospitality Industry Internships

The Hospitality Industry Internship (HII) provides the opportunity for Florida HTMP instructors to work in a lodging establishment for at least 40 hours. Once the required paperwork has been processed, the participant will receive a personal check for $600 from the FRLAEF.

To qualify for an HII, the instructor must teach the HTMP curriculum during the 2017-2018 school year. If you are already employed at a restaurant or hotel, you MAY NOT use that site for your internship. The restaurant/hotel must also be a new work experience for you, not somewhere you have worked before or used as an HII internship location.

The applicant must secure a position at a foodservice or lodging facility where a minimum of 40 hours of hands-on experience is guaranteed. The host location may pay the recipient but is not required to do so.

The FRLAEF will award 11 HII’s this school year on a first-come, first-served basis. So apply NOW! Work experience may begin once the applicant receives an award notification from the FRLAEF.
