NRAEF Data Collection (Fall Survey) — Deadline This Month
The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) ProStart Data Collection is currently under way. The survey was emailed to all ProStart schools on Tuesday, September 20, 2016. The email originated from [email protected]. If you did not receive your survey, double-check your spam/junk folder. If you can’t find it, let us know and we will get it resent to you.
After we receive confirmation you have completed the survey, we will contact you. At that time you may request $350 in free Foodsafety Training materials.of

ProStart Competitions Teams Announced!
The 2017 ProStart Competition teams have been selected. Schools were notified via email of the competitions they were chosen for on Thursday, October 20, 2016. The email also contained required entry forms. If you did not receive your award email, please contact Amy Parker at [email protected]. For a list of selected teams CLICK HERE.
The 17th Annual ProStart Culinary Team Competitions takes place Friday, March 3 — Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the Rosen Plaza Hotel in Orlando. The competition is open to the public. You do not need to register to attend. Hotel block rate information can be found at the link above.
Tampa Teacher Earns CSFE
Cheryl White, ProStart teacher at Bowers/Whitley Career Center in Tampa, recently earned the Certified Secondary Foodservice Educator (CSFE) Certification.
Cheryl grew up in Boston in a family-owned restaurant business. After college, she worked 22 years with Hyatt Hotels & Resorts. She has called Florida home since the 1980’s. While with Hyatt, she worked as an adjunct professor at Hillsborough Community College for 13 years. Cheryl is in her 13th year teaching High School and the ProStart curriculum.
In her free time, Cheryl is a member of an all-woman’s Krewe that participate in all the Gasparilla parades in Tampa and around the state. Along with throwing a LOT of beads, the Krewe, named Krewe of Agustina de Aragon, do a lot of community service work.
The Certified Secondary Foodservice Educator certification (CSFE) was developed for educators at the secondary level to:
- Improve and enhance restaurant and foodservice knowledge
- Develop technical and teaching skills
- Satisfy certification and credential requirements of state and local school districts and professional and trade associations

Hospitality Industry Internships Awarded
The Hospitality Industry Internship (HII) provides the opportunity for Florida ProStart instructors to work in a foodservice establishment for at least 40 hours. At the completion of 40 work hours, the HII participant will receive a check for $600 from the FRLAEF.

Broward School Gets Visit From French Students
Exchange students from France visited J.P. Taravella High School and local restaurants and hotels last month. J.P. Taravella High is currently working toward a 2017 trip to France. CLICK HERE for more information and video.

Mini Grants
The FRLAEF Board met in September and awarded $80,000 in Mini Grant Funds. Schools that received a mini grant have until November 18, 2016 to spend the funds.

Salute to Excellence Awards Dinner
The Salute to Excellence Awards will take place on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the Rosen Plaza Hotel in Orlando. The awards dinner will recognize all ProStart Competition, Pineapple Award, Scholarship recipients and Hospitality Excellence Awardees. Registration will begin in December 2016.
Foodsafety Materials
Each Premier and Full ProStart program is eligible for free Foodsafety materials. To ensure you get the materials you need, you must notify us. Once we receive your ProStart Classification paperwork, you can order up to $350 of Foodsafety materials. Click here for the ServSafe price list. Email Amy Parker to place your order–you do not need to fill out the form. Requests are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

ProStart Scantrons
The FRLAEF will distribute over $25,000 worth of free ProStart Exam Scantrons to Premier and Full ProStart schools during the 2016-2017 school year. Once a school has turned in their ProStart Classification paperwork, email Amy Parker to let her know how many ProStart Exam Scantrons you need. Requests are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Scholarships
The FRLAEF will award $44,000 in scholarships during the 2016-2017 school year. These scholarships will be awarded during the Salute to Excellence Awards in the Spring. The scholarship application will be available in late Fall.
The 20th Annual ProStart Teacher Training Institute will take place in June 18-23, 2017. The week-long training provides Florida ProStart instructors with the knowledge necessary to teach the ProStart curriculum. Each day’s learning is built around topics covered in the ProStart curriculum.
LOCATION
All classes will be held at Johnson & Wales University (JWU) North Miami campus, 1701 NE 127th Street, North Miami, Florida, 33181.
PROGRAM COST
The FRLAEF will cover the cost of all Florida ProStart instructors who will be teaching the ProStart curriculum during the 2017-2018 school year. Attendees will be responsible for their travel and some meals.
REGISTRATION
Online registration will begin Spring 2017.
