FRLAEF Scholarship Application — Deadline THIS MONTH

The FRLAEF will be awarding $64,000 in scholarships to ProStart and HTMP students during the Salute to Excellence Awards dinner on Saturday, March 2, 2019.

In order to be eligible for this scholarship the applicant must:

• Be a graduating senior who will begin post-secondary education in 2019
• Be entering a culinary or hospitality post-secondary program
• Return a copy of their OFFICIAL high school transcript to FRLAEF by application deadline

ProStart Competition Teams: Paperwork due THIS MONTH

For those schools selected to compete in the 2019 ProStart Competitions–your paperwork is due no later than January 25, 2019. This paperwork includes the online School Entry Form, Participant Waivers for each student, and proof that each student is a junior or senior.

Paperwork was emailed to each teacher individually in October. Please let us know if we need to resend to you.



Competitions Around the State

DAYTONA STATE COLLEGE COMPETITION   The annual Daytona State College competition took place on December 7, 2018. Several ProStart schools participated in the event. Bayside High School in Brevard County took top honors in the Culinary Competition, followed by Spruce Creek High School in second and Seabreeze High School in third.

Marathon High School won first place  in the Edible Centerpiece competition, with Spruce Creek taking  second place and Clay County’s Ridgeview High School garnering third-place honors.

In the Management Competition, Lake Minneola High School from Lake County took first-place honors, followed by Dade County’s Hialeah Gardens High School in second and Marathon High School in third.

For Waiter’s Relay,  Seabreeze High School won first place, with Lake Minneola High School in second and Dunnellon High School taking third.

 

ORANGE COUNTY COMPETITION  Orange County Public Schools and the Orlando World Center Marriott recently hosted the 8th Annual OCPS Culinary and Hospitality Competition! Fifty-nine industry chefs served as judges and demonstrators for over 258 high school career and technical education student competitors in disciplines such as dessert, gourmet meal, edible/non-edible centerpiece, knife skills, waiter relay, food prep and more.


Information about CAPE, SafeStaff and More

  • SafeStaff is a performance measure for Perkins funds.  Please turn in your SafeStaff results to the same person you turn in your ServSafe results.
  • www.floridashines.org is the host sight for MyCareerShines.  This website exist to help students earn a college degree and find a bright career.  They work closely with Florida’s 40 colleges and universities.  Students can check their transcripts, explore libraries and track their success.  There are student log in options as well as parent log in options.
  • Don’t forget www.goprostart.com.  They have practice exams for ProStart and ServSafe.  The exams are broken down into three optioins:  15 questions (Sampler), 80 questions (Entrée) or 45 questions (Dessert).

ProStart Scantron Update

The 1st edition of Foundations of Restaurant Management and Culinary Arts distributed by Pearson is going out of print. Pearson is no longer selling the printed answer sheets and online exam vouchers.  However, the National Restaurant Association will continue processing the answer sheets.  You may reach them by email at cte@pearson.com or call 800-848-9500 prior to that date. However, as of January 1, 2019, you may purchase these 1st edition exam items directly from the National Restaurant Association. Please contact your Foundations rep or email textbooks@restaurant.org for 2019 orders or to learn more about the new 2nd Edition of FRMCA.


Culinary 1-3 Progression

Pinellas County Schools shared their Culinary 1 – 3 progression chart.  This chart was created to visually show the progression of learning throughout the frameworks.  This chart is a work in progress and is reviewed yearly.  CLICK HERE to view it.


ProStart ExamView Help

NRA Solutions team worked with Turning Technologies to host a ExamView webinar recording via the developer’s ftp site. The recording is not as intuitive or elegant as we would like it to be, but I believe it can still help teachers learn the ropes.

Hospitality Industry Internships

The Hospitality Industry Internship (HII) provides the opportunity for Florida ProStart & HTMP instructors to work in a foodservice/lodging establishment for at least 40 hours. Once the required paperwork has been processed, the participant will receive a personal check for $600 from the FRLAEF.

To qualify for an HII, the instructor must teach the ProStart/HTMP curriculum during the 2018-2019 school year. If you are already employed at a restaurant or hotel, you MAY NOT use that site for your internship. The restaurant/hotel must also be a new work experience for you, not somewhere you have worked before or used as an HII internship location.

The applicant must secure a position at a foodservice or lodging facility where a minimum of 40 hours of hands-on experience is guaranteed. The host location may pay the recipient but is not required to do so.

The FRLAEF will award 11 HII’s this school year on a first-come, first-served basis. So apply NOW! Work experience may begin once the applicant receives an award notification from the FRLAEF.

Salute to Excellence Awards Dinner

The Salute to Excellence Awards will take place on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at the Rosen Plaza Hotel in Orlando. The awards dinner will recognize all ProStart Competition, Pineapple Award, Scholarship recipients and Hospitality Excellence Awardees. Registration will begin in January 2019.

ProStart instructors will have the opportunity to recognize one student during the awards dinner with a Hospitality Excellence Award. These students will be called on stage during the awards dinner and recognized with a certificate.

All ProStart instructors may receive a complimentary ticket to the awards dinner. Hospitality Excellence Award students receive two complimentary tickets, one for them and one for a guest.

COMPETING TEAMS–don’t forget to make your hotel reservations ASAP. You can always cancel them 72 hours out, but don’t wait too long to book!

HOTEL  The Rosen Plaza Hotel will be the host site for the 2019 ProStart Culinary Team Competitions.  The room rate at the Rosen Plaza is $129 per night.

Each Premier and Full ProStart program is eligible for free ServSafe or SafeStaff materials.  To ensure you get the materials you need, you must notify us of your needs.  Once we receive your ProStart Classification paperwork, you can order up to $350 of ServSafe/SafeStaff materials. Click here for the price list. Email Amy Parker to place your order–you do not need to fill out the form. Requests are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

NRAEF has finally made the 7th edition Instructor tools available! The Instructor USB is $200 if you are interested. It is listed on the price sheet.


Complimentary ProStart Scantrons

The FRLAEF will distribute over $25,000 worth of free ProStart Exam Scantrons to Premier and Full ProStart schools during the 2018-2019 school year. Once a school has turned in their ProStart Classification paperwork, email Amy Parker to let her know how many ProStart Exam Scantrons you need. Requests are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.


ProStart Teacher Training Institute–Save the Date

The 23rd Annual ProStart Teacher Training Institute will take place in June 16-21, 2019. The week-long training providesTTI 2016 background WHITE-min-1 Florida ProStart instructors with the knowledge necessary to teach the ProStart curriculum. Each day’s learning is built around topics covered in the ProStart curriculum.

LOCATION

All classes will be held at Johnson & Wales University (JWU) North Miami campus, 1701 NE 127th Street, North Miami, Florida, 33181.

PROGRAM COST

The FRLAEF will cover the cost of all Florida ProStart instructors who will be teaching the ProStart curriculum during the 2019-2020 school year. Attendees will be responsible for their travel and some meals.

REGISTRATION

Online registration will begin Spring 2019.
