New HTM (Hospitality & Tourism Management) Curriculum–Zoom Meeting Sign-Up

The FRLAEF will conduct a zoom meeting regarding the new HTM curriculum on Wednesday, April 14 at 3:00 PM. A representative from the NRAEF will be present to walk you through the textbook and materials. CLICK HERE to sign up to attend.

The National Restaurant Association (NRA) is excited to announce the new HTM curriculum has been released.  The new edition will be one textbook which is over 500 pages.  In the past, the operational material was covered in one year while the managerial material was covered in the second year.  In the new edition, both levels of knowledge will be covered in the same chapter.

The new certification will be the Hospitality & Tourism Specialist.  It will be a stand-alone credential for entry level hospitality.  In addition to the educational component, it will also require 100 hours of industry experience.  As it will not require the HTM curriculum to earn the certification, our expectation is the certification will meet DOE’s requirements for the CAPE list.  Unfortunately, DOE’s CAPE list is complete for the 2021-2022 school year.  We hope to have this certification on the list for the 2022-2023 school year.

If you wish to still cover the material in two years, NRA is providing supporting material outlining what information should be covered in each year.  The one final exam at the end of the full textbook may be split into two exams if you wish to cover the material in two years.  The exams will align with the supporting information NRA is providing.  If you have already completed the current edition Year One with students, there will be a bridge document to outline what material needs to be covered in the new edition for your former Year One students.

We anticipate a Webinar with NRA in April to provide an opportunity for you to see the curriculum in action.  NRA will also be providing a 21-day license to sample the materials.  FRLAEF anticipates having funding available to schools to purchase the new materials prior to the end of this school year.  Of course, our funding will be contingent upon you using the curriculum during the upcoming 2021-2022 school year.  Look for information from us regarding all these opportunities!

FRLAEF Scholarship Applications–Current & Former Students!


The FRLAEF will award approximately $40,000 in scholarships during the 2020-2021 school year! These scholarships will be awarded in May. The scholarship application link is below. Please share with all your graduating seniors who are going to post secondary school to study anything in the field of Culinary, Foodservice or Hospitality.

The FRLAEF will award two to three $1,000 scholarships to students who are currently enrolled in a post-secondary culinary, foodservice or hospitality program. Please get the word out to your former students!

Hospitality Industry Internships

The Hospitality Industry Internship (HII) provides the opportunity for Florida HTMP instructors to work in a lodging establishment for at least 40 hours. Once the required paperwork has been processed, the participant will receive a personal check for $600.

To qualify for an HII, the instructor must teach the HTMP curriculum during the 2020-2021 school year. If you are already employed at a hotel, you MAY NOT use that site for your internship. The hotel must be a new work experience for you, not somewhere you have worked before or used as an HII internship location.

The applicant must secure a position at a lodging facility where a minimum of 40 hours of hands-on experience is guaranteed. The host location may pay the recipient but is not required to do so.

The FRLAEF will award 11 HII’s this school year on a first-come, first-served basis. So apply NOW! Work experience may begin once the applicant receives an award notification from the FRLAEF.

University of Central Florida, Rosen College Marketing Video


Florida’s DOE is honoring the previously approved HTMP remote proctoring for certifications that will be applied to the 2019-2020 school year. CLICK HERE for the list of approved home testing certifications.  This process will allow your approved proctor to administer the HTMP exam to up to 3 students at one time.  You will watch your students take the exam using your school sanctioned web/video conferencing software.

In the past, the fee to take the exam was covered when you purchased a scantron in the HTMP workbook.  There is currently no way to purchase just the HTMP scantron.  Therefore, you may turn in your current scantrons to receive your online voucher code.  Contact Stacey Metz at if you need to exchange scantrons for codes.




CHI Scholarships Available

The American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (EI) offers the Certified Hospitality Instructor (CHI) designation toCHI Profile_Page_1_Page_1 hospitality instructors. Professional certifications have become a requirement for many secondary school teachers and workforce instructors. The Certified Hospitality Instructor (CHI) provides teachers in secondary school hospitality classes and workforce development programs with a solid foundation of hospitality knowledge and skills, so they can more effectively convey the information to students and better prepare them for careers in hospitality. Prospective CHI candidates may teach one of EI’s hospitality programs, including the Hospitality and Tourism Management Program (HTMP), Skills, Tasks, And Result Training (START), or any other secondary-level hospitality curriculum.

The CHI learning format is a two-level self-study program that includes print resources and online study modules presented by Michael “Doc” Terry, CHE, a hospitality instructor at the University of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management. Each level consists of 13 modules with an online exam that must be passed with a score of 70 percent or higher. The learning modules relate to the content presented in EI’s, two-year high school curriculum, the Hospitality and Tourism Management Program (HTMP). Candidates must also complete a 120-hour hospitality internship to earn the certification. Certification candidates have six months to complete the program requirements.

The cost for the new certification program is $750.00, which includes both books, the online courses, and the exams.

The FRLAEF will cover the training costs for each of the CHI Scholarship recipients.
