HTMP Competition Results
The Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association Educational Foundation (FRLAEF) announced the winners of the 13th Annual Hospitality and Tourism Management Program (HTMP) Competition which was held Sunday, February 7 and Monday, February 8, 2016 at the Rosen Plaza Hotel in Orlando.
Forty-four students from across the state participated in the day’s events and won more than $30,000 in scholarships. All winners and participants are a part of the Hospitality and Tourism Management Program (HTMP) which was developed by industry experts and is the official industry-recognized curriculum to prepare students for roles in the hotel industry and beyond. The program is delivered with graphic-rich textbooks and workbooks, and incorporates the best of modern technology with a selection of online coursework. This year, there were three different competitive categories: Hotel Operations, Hospitality Project and the Knowledge Bowl.
Miami Beach Senior High School won first place in the overall competition. Miami Sunset Senior High School took home second place in the overall competition, with Winter Park High School placing third.
“The competition was fierce, but these students showed they were up for a challenge. Congratulations to all of our winners and participants who are passionate about the hospitality industry. We look forward to their continued success as they move forward with careers and educational opportunities. They are the future of Florida and we are thrilled to help train them as HTMP students right here in the Sunshine State,” said Carol Dover, President and CEO of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association.

HTMP Teacher of the Year
The HTMP Teacher of the Year is Joanne Goodman from Oak Ridge High School in Orlando.
Ms. Goodman started her career in hospitality while in high school with a dream to own her own ski resort in Colorado. She never owned her own resort, but she had a fabulous career with Marriott Hotels, where she was a manager for 22 years, and a General Manager for 13 of those 22. With Marriott, she worked in five states, in ten hotels, and for four different Marriott Brands. During her time with Marriott, Ms Goodman was recognized by the FRLAEF as an Industry Partner of the Year for her dedication to helping the Mid Florida Tech HTMP Program. She is the only person to have received a Pineapple Award as an Industry Participant AND as a teacher.
Ms. Goodman was able to retire from Marriott in 2010 and has been teaching for both Orange County and Valencia College as a hospitality management instructor ever since. Although her career with Marriott was extremely fulfilling, she has said consistently over these five years, that she has found her purpose.
As the HTMP instructor at Oak Ridge High School, Ms. Goodman is able to use her resources to assist the program. She has been able to successfully bring the industry into the classroom, and her students into the hospitality community. She is so thankful to Principal Dr. Bradshaw for allowing her the freedom to lead her program and bring in guest speakers, mentors, as well as supporting the many field trips, student job shadows and intern opportunities.
