FRLA’s Statement on BP Settlement

On Thursday, BP and five Gulf states impacted by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill announced an $18.7 billion settlement. As part of the agreement in principle, Florida  will receive at least $3.25 billion. Immediately following the settlement, FRLA President and CEO, Carol Dover, issued the following statement:

“On behalf of our more than 10,000 Florida hoteliers, restaurateurs, and hospitality and tourism members, we applaud Governor Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi for their steadfast leadership in fighting for the economic and environmental dollars owed to those who support Florida’s economic engine. Five years after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, we still do not know the extent of the damage done to the Gulf, however this is a first step in making our industry whole.”

FRLA Warns Consumers to Watch Out for Hotel Booking Scams

(Tallahassee, FL) – As families book vacations this summer, the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association (FRLA) is continuing to warn consumers about fraudulent hotel booking practices. Nationally, it is estimated by the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AH&LA) that there are 2.5 million bookings a year that are deceptive, which amounts to $220 million. With one in three travelers booking online, FRLA and AH&LA want to ensure that consumers don’t suffer the consequences from lost rooms, bad bookings, cancellation fees and charges. Earlier this month, the Florida Congressional Delegation sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requesting an investigation into these practices.

“These fraudulent vendors are putting consumers at risk. They’re tricking guests by offering bad deals disguised as discounts, creating false identities and using questionable privacy practices. We commend the Florida Congressional Delegation for urging the FTC to open an investigation. We want visitors to experience the exceptional accommodations we have here in Florida and we aim to help protect them from these scammers,” said Carol Dover, President and CEO of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association.

The following is a list of tips for consumers planning to book hotels online:

  • Beware of where you book: Make sure you know who you are dealing with. Third party vendors often make promises they cannot keep, and they likely cannot help if something goes wrong.

  • Book direct: Consumers should book directly with the hotel either via web or phone to avoid being scammed. This is always the safest bet and will ensure you are protected and get the best value.

  • Only use trusted sites: Although the hotel’s name may be part of the URL, double check the website address to ensure it’s not a third-party vendor.

  • Be sure you call the hotel directly and ask the right questions when booking to ensure you protect your information, your reservation, your points and your credit information.
  • What is the privacy policy?  Make sure your personal information isn’t harvested.
  • What is the cancellation/trip change policy?  Most of these third party booking sites don’t allow cancellations, changes, or any sort of refunds.
  • Is the site, in any way, affiliated with the hotel?  If no, your points may not be honored.
  • Is it a secure payment site? The URL should have a small lock and should start with https:// as opposed to just http://.

  • Contact the Federal Trade Commission: If a vendor has misrepresented itself to you or if you’ve fallen victim to a hotel booking scam, contact the FTC to alert them to the issue. Visit ftc.gov/complaint to file your complaint.

(Tallahassee, FL) – The Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association (FRLA) applauds Governor Rick Scott’s “Keep Florida Working” budget and his efforts to slash the cell phone and TV tax. Currently, the communications services tax (CST), is an unnecessary financial burden on businesses and Floridians who are paying a rate of 9.17 percent on commercial landlines, cell phone and cable services, and 13.17 percent on satellite services. FRLA is hopeful that the Florida Legislature will approve Governor Scott’s tax cut proposal that will save Floridians an estimated $470 million annually.

“By working to cut the cell phone and TV tax, Governor Scott is once again giving Florida families a greater opportunity to succeed and the chance for businesses to thrive. His efforts will continue to make our great state a wonderful place for restaurants, hotels and attractions to set up shop, in turn building on our record success as a tourism destination. Not to mention, this will put money back in Floridians’ pockets and give them the opportunity to enjoy world-class hospitality service in their own backyard,” said Carol Dover, President and CEO of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association.

Gov. Scott: Florida Smashes All-Time Record Quarter for Tourism

Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that Florida set another record in tourism numbers by welcoming the highest amount of visitors of any quarter in the state’s history according to VISIT FLORIDA. In the first quarter of 2015 (January-March), 28.4 million visitors came to the state, an increase of 6.2 percent over the same period in 2014. The previous high for a quarter for tourism was 26.7 million visitors in quarter one last year. The average number of direct travel-related jobs in quarter one of 2015 was also a record high, with 1,186,900 Floridians employed in the tourism industry – up 4.8 percent from the same period in 2014.

Governor Scott said, “I am proud to announce that the Sunshine State continued our record breaking success and welcomed the most visitors of any quarter in Florida’s history. Our growing tourism industry employs over 1 million Floridians and is helping us meet our goal of becoming the global destination for jobs. We are excited to start 2015 off with our biggest quarter ever, which puts us on pace to exceed our goal of 100 million visitors to Florida this year.”

VISIT FLORIDA estimates that 2.9 million overseas visitors and 1.7 million Canadians came to Florida in quarter one of 2015, both of which are record highs and represent 7.1 percent and 1.2 percent increases over quarter one of 2014 respectively.  Estimates also show that 23.8 million domestic visitors traveled to Florida in quarter one of 2015, reflecting a 6.5 percent increase over the same period last year.

“Experiencing the largest quarter for tourism in our state’s history, including and especially a record number of tourism-related jobs, proves that tourism continues to be a vital force in Florida,” said Andrew Hertz, Chair of the VISIT FLORIDA Board of Directors. “These records also emphasize the power of tourism as a way to sustain Florida’s economic growth.”

Tourism and recreation taxable sales for Florida increased year-over-year for January and February 2015 (last reported month), representing a 10.0 percent increase over the same period in 2014.  For quarter one of 2015, the average daily room rate (ADR) rose 7.6 percent, the occupancy rate for Florida hotels increased 3.7 percent and the demand in rooms sold grew 5.1 percent compared to quarter one of 2014.

“With all indicators continuing to climb, Florida tourism has strong momentum,” said Will Seccombe, President and CEO of VISIT FLORIDA. “In addition to the record visitation, our market share is outpacing the rest of the nation, putting us well on our way to making Florida the No. 1 travel destination in the world.”

John Tomlin, Vice Chair of the VISIT FLORIDA Board of Directors and Chief Operating Officer for The Auto Club Group said, “Achieving record visitation for the first quarter of 2015 provides strong momentum towards our goal of bringing 100 million visitors to Florida this year.  Florida is fortunate to have the strong support of Governor Scott and the Legislature, as well as increased funding matched by dollars from great industry partners. This support allows VISIT FLORIDA to reach even more markets and potential visitors with compelling reasons to visit Florida and create memories for a lifetime.  With continued support, the Sunshine State is poised to become the No. 1 travel destination in the world.”

Carol Dover, Member of the VISIT FLORIDA Board of Directors and President & CEO of the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association said, “The hospitality industry here in Florida is world-class, so it’s no wonder why visitors are continuing to flock to our great state in astounding record numbers. We are thrilled to host millions of guests at our exceptional restaurants, hotels and attractions and are proud to create opportunities for families that allow them to enjoy all the Sunshine State has to offer. With continued VISIT FLORIDA support from Governor Scott and the Legislature, we can once again increase the number of visitors, jobs created and revenue generated to ensure Florida remains a wonderful place to live, work and play.”

Bill Lupfer, Chair of the VISIT FLORIDA Public Affairs Committee and President & CEO of the Florida Attractions Association said, “Florida’s outstanding attractions and iconic destinations have a lot to be proud of, and the first quarter is just that – the first in what is sure to be another stellar year.  As we continue to shatter industry records and make the Sunshine State the gold standard for tourism across the country and around the world, we are grateful for the hard work of our industry partners and the support of Governor Scott and the Florida Legislature.”

Lino Maldonado, Chair of the VISIT FLORIDA Industry Relations Committee and Vice President of Operations for ResortQuest by Wyndham Vacation Rentals said, “Another record shattering quarter for Florida tourism is not really a surprise.  It’s actually the byproduct of tremendous efforts each and every day by those who serve their guests with a passion and deliver GREAT experiences.  We are fortunate to have a Governor and Legislature that support our industry and VISIT FLORIDA so that we can continue to share the beautiful stories of our State with the world.”

*Preliminary estimates are issued 45 days after the end of each calendar quarter. Final estimates are released when final data are received for all estimates in the report.

FRLA Members Prepare for Mother’s Day

ERay@FRLA.org

(Tallahassee, Fla) Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association (FRLA) members are preparing for Mother’s Day, as it marks the most popular holiday to dine-out.

According to the National Restaurant Association (NRA), nearly half of Americans will dine out or order restaurant takeout or delivery on May 10. New NRA research also shows dinner as the most popular meal period to dine out, and that six in 10 consumers who plan to celebrate the occasion by dining out will do so at a relaxed, casual dining restaurant.

“We are thrilled to help families celebrate the wonderful women in their lives by hosting them at exceptional restaurants here in Florida,” said Carol Dover, President and CEO of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association. “This is a fantastic opportunity to savor the flavors unique to the Sunshine State and our FRLA members are ready to showcase their hospitality by setting the table for incredible experiences statewide.”

“With one million restaurant and foodservice locations across the United States, consumers have myriad options this Mother’s Day,” said Hudson Riehle, Senior Vice President of Research for the National Restaurant Association. “Whether consumers pick mom’s preferred buffet breakfast or her favorite fine-dining dinner, America’s restaurants are stepping up to the plate to help families celebrate the special occasion. And while a majority of consumers make their Mother’s Day meal plans less than a month out, nearly one in five has been planning their celebratory meals for more than one month.”

According to the National Restaurant Association’s survey:

·         38 percent of consumers plan to dine out on Mother’s Day.

·         7 percent plan on getting restaurant takeout or delivery.

In addition, the new research shows that of consumers who plan to have a celebratory restaurant meal on Mother’s Day:

·         62 percent will select a casual dining restaurant.

·         25 percent will opt for fine dining.

·         15 percent will choose a buffet-style restaurant.

·         8 percent say they plan to go to a fast casual restaurant.

·         2 percent will opt for traditional quickservice.

When it comes to when consumers will have their Mother’s Day restaurant meals:

·         49 percent will dine out for dinner.

·         33 percent will select lunch.

·         24 percent will choose brunch.

·         8 percent say they will opt for breakfast.

Among consumers who plan on ordering restaurant takeout or delivery for their Mother’s Day meal:

·         53 percent plan to do so for dinner.

·         43 percent plan on doing it for lunch.

Brunch is more common among older consumers (31 percent of individuals 65 and older), while younger consumers are more likely to choose dinner (56 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds).*

Older consumers are more likely to choose a fine dining restaurant (41 percent of those 65 and older), while younger consumers are more likely to visit a buffet (22 percent of those 18-24). Households with children are also more likely to choose a buffet (22 percent).

This year, 83 percent of those who plan to celebrate Mother’s Day at a restaurant made their plans to do so less than one month ahead of time. Seventeen percent made their plans well in advance, longer than one month prior.

Note: Numbers may add up to more than 100 percent because some consumers plan to dine out or order restaurant takeout or delivery more than once on Mother’s Day.

The online survey of 1,009 adults was conducted April 27-29, 2015, by ORC International on behalf of the National Restaurant Association, asking respondents about their dining plans for Mother’s Day.
