Mini Grants–Awards Going Out Soon
The FRLAEF offered $80,000 in Mini Grant funding to HTMP and ProStart schools this year. There is no fixed amount for individual grant awards, but the average award last year was $700.
The FRLAEF Board of Directors met this week to determine award amounts. If you applied for a Mini Grant, be on the lookout for an email from Laura Rumer with your award information. You should receive the email no later then October 30.
Florida HTMP Competition—UPDATE
The current intention of FRLAEF is to host an in-person competition. We do not intend to host a virtual competition. If we can not host an in-person competition our assumption is you can not adequately gather for practice. With everything that is going on, we do not want to add a virtual competition to your plate just for the sake of hosting a competition.
With that being said, we have pushed the competition dates back to April 26-27, 2021. We know that may cause a challenge with testing schedules but based on DOE’s testing calendar, we think we can slip the competition in. We know there is no way we could host the competition on the original dates in February.
Once everyone returns to school in January we will assess the travel situation. If enough interested schools can travel and want to participate, then we will host the event. If no one can travel, then we will cancel the HTMP Competition for 2021.

HTMP Best Practices Zoom Meeting Notes
The FRLAEF held two Best Practice zoom meetings for teachers to discuss ways they are navigating their fall teaching schedules. The notes below are a combination of both Zoom calls. The recording includes Elizabeth O’Brien, with the National Restaurant Association, providing an update on the new HTM materials which will be released in the spring of 2021.

REMOTE PROCTORING FOR HTMP NOW AVAILABLE!
Florida’s DOE is honoring the previously approved HTMP remote proctoring for certifications that will be applied to the 2019-2020 school year. CLICK HERE for the list of approved home testing certifications. This process will allow your approved proctor to administer the HTMP exam to up to 3 students at one time. You will watch your students take the exam using your school sanctioned web/video conferencing software.
In the past, the fee to take the exam was covered when you purchased a scantron in the HTMP workbook. There is currently no way to purchase just the HTMP scantron. Therefore, you may turn in your current scantrons to receive your online voucher code. Contact Stacey Metz at [email protected] if you need to exchange scantrons for codes.

CHI Scholarships Available
The American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (EI) offers the Certified Hospitality Instructor (CHI) designation to
hospitality instructors. Professional certifications have become a requirement for many secondary school teachers and workforce instructors. The Certified Hospitality Instructor (CHI) provides teachers in secondary school hospitality classes and workforce development programs with a solid foundation of hospitality knowledge and skills, so they can more effectively convey the information to students and better prepare them for careers in hospitality. Prospective CHI candidates may teach one of EI’s hospitality programs, including the Hospitality and Tourism Management Program (HTMP), Skills, Tasks, And Result Training (START), or any other secondary-level hospitality curriculum.
The CHI learning format is a two-level self-study program that includes print resources and online study modules presented by Michael “Doc” Terry, CHE, a hospitality instructor at the University of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management. Each level consists of 13 modules with an online exam that must be passed with a score of 70 percent or higher. The learning modules relate to the content presented in EI’s, two-year high school curriculum, the Hospitality and Tourism Management Program (HTMP). Candidates must also complete a 120-hour hospitality internship to earn the certification. Certification candidates have six months to complete the program requirements.
The cost for the new certification program is $750.00, which includes both books, the online courses, and the exams.
The FRLAEF will cover the training costs for each of the CHI Scholarship recipients.

Scholarships
The FRLAEF will award at least $44,000 in scholarships during the 2020-2021 school year. The scholarship application will be available in late Fall/Early Spring.
All HTMP graduating seniors may apply for this one-time $2,000 scholarship.
